QARUN LAKE — THE ANCIENT SEA

Lake Qarun is one of the oldest natural lakes in the world and one of Fayoum’s defining landmarks. Once connected to the ancient Nile system, the lake has witnessed thousands of years of Egyptian history.

The ancient Egyptians considered the lake sacred. Greeks later called it “Lake Moeris,” and Roman settlements flourished nearby. Fishing communities survived around its shores for centuries, creating a culture deeply connected to the water.

At sunset, Lake Qarun changes completely. The wind becomes colder, the sky turns orange, and the lake reflects the desert around it like glass.

It is not only a place in Fayoum — it is part of Fayoum’s identity.

بحيرة قارون تعتبر واحدة من أقدم البحيرات الطبيعية في العالم ومن أهم معالم الفيوم. البحيرة كانت متصلة قديمًا بمنظومة النيل، وشهدت آلاف السنين من تاريخ مصر.

المصريين القدماء اعتبروا البحيرة مكان مقدس. وبعدهم الإغريق سموها “بحيرة موريس”، وازدهرت حولها المستوطنات الرومانية. وعلى مدار قرون، عاش الصيادون حوالين شواطئها وصنعوا ثقافة مرتبطة بالمياه بشكل كامل.

وقت الغروب، بحيرة قارون بتتغير تمامًا. الهوا بيبرد، والسماء تبقى برتقالية، والبحيرة تعكس الصحراء حواليها كأنها مراية.
